Curious about what goes on during your child's eye exam? While every exam is tailored, here are some of the friendly checks we do to make sure their eyes are happy and healthy:

  • Patient History & Chat We'll start by chatting with you about your child's health, any vision concerns, and family eye history. It's a team effort!
  • Visual Acuity ("Picture Detective" or "Letter Game") Using special charts with pictures or letters (depending on age), we see how clearly your child can see from different distances. It's like a fun guessing game!
  • Eye Teaming & Tracking ("Follow the Leader Toy") We'll use a small toy or light to see how well your child's eyes follow objects and work together as a team.
  • Focusing Power ("Magic Window Test") We check how well their eyes can focus up close (like for reading) and far away, often using cool lenses.
  • Eye Health Check ("Inner Eye Peek") With gentle lights, we take a peek inside the eye to make sure everything is healthy, from the front to the back.
  • Color Vision & Depth Perception Fun puzzles or pictures might be used to check how they see colors and perceive 3D space.

Plotting the Course for Healthy Vision: When to Schedule Eye Exams.

Just like regular pediatrician visits, routine eye exams are key to healthy development. The American Optometric Association (AOA) recommends this schedule for comprehensive eye exams:

First Exam: Between 6 to 12 Months Old

Second Exam: At Age 3
